Joining the Beyond the School Project
Is there any financial help available?
Yes there is help available through the Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots Programme. This is a scheme eligible for organisations working in partnership with young people who are 13-20 years old (up to 25 for those with special needs). It encourages them to find out about their heritage, develop skills and enhance their community involvement. Young Roots projects should develop directly from young peoples' particular interests and ideas and will bring together their energy and enthusiasm, helping them to collaborate with other members of their local community.
What is a Heritage project?
Heritage can mean many different things. It can be connected with culture, the local area or something which is of particular interest to an individual. Sometimes it is concerned with practices that are handed down from the past by tradition-generation to generation. These are captured either trough old photographs or paintings, sometimes in witing in the form of stories and other forms of documents and also in film and audio archives. Sometimes they are simply passed on by word of mouth in the memories and recollections of the old.
Getting started
A simple way is to start by asking them to answer some of these questions -Where does my family come from? What characteristics have I inherited from previous generations? What aspects of my life are important to me? What would I miss if I moved far away from where I was born and raised? What connects me to my friends, my family and my community?
The Beyond the School Project encourages young people to engage with these questions and to use their local community to help answer them.
What are the other benefits of the Beyond the School project?
If you become involved in a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund you can obtain the finance necessary for the purchase of the hardware and software needed for the project. This funding will also cover the cost of all the training offered to students and teachers to enable them to fully participate and to maximise the learning opportunities in the project.
