Beyond the curriculum

Schools, Colleges, Pupil Referral Units and other youth and community groups can use the Beyond the School project to develop a range of cross curricular skills and competencies. This project also corresponds significantly with many aspects of the Key Skills Programme- the skills which are most commonly needed to succeed in a range of activities – at work, in education and training and in everyday life.
Communication skills
For example in developing the Key Skill of Communication, students will learn to use and adapt their communication skills confidently and effectively in a range of settings and contexts. They will be encouraged to show that they can take part in a discussion, read and obtain information from documents and write different types of document. The Beyond the School project presents many opportunities for students to develop these skills such as by taking part in either a one-to-one discussion or a discussion possibly with members of the local community.
Information and Communication Technology
During the project, students will use computers, cameras, video cameras, scanners, digital dictaphones, graphic programmes and web administration interfaces. The skills which they develop through this activity will help them with their work across the curriculum and in any other project – at school as well as in the workplace. This use of ICT can be used to develop Key Skills competencies such as finding, entering, exploring and developing relevant information gained during the field research parts of the project. Students will also present information, including text, images and numbers, using a variety of appropriate layouts and presentation techniques.
Wider Key Skills
The project also supports the acquisition of the wider Key Skills (Working with Others, Improving Own Learning and Performance and Problem Solving) through the development of the individuals ability to work on his or her own initiative and as part of a team involved in the research, planning, development and presentation of the project's results.
Beyond your local project
You will be able to upload the results of your project onto the pages of the Beyond the School web site, where it can be used for educational purposes in all the other participating organisations. Likewise your own institution will be able to use the results of all the other projects for the same purpose. You will be able to search for the information about other localities on the web pages www.beyondtheschool.org.uk and follow the changes which have taken place during the course of the 20th century. Together these project results will form a huge resource through which you will be able to show the students the life of past generations and the changes to the environment. Through the web-site, students can communicate with visitors or with the creators of other projects.
